The Taunton Sinfonietta, Somerset

Autumn Newsletter

August 2018

Greetings from the Taunton Sinfonietta!

What a sudden end to a blazing Summer - a shock to the system, though good for the plants - and now for a resumption of fine music-making and concerts!

Taunton Sinfonietta begins with "September Strings", bringing the warm, mellifluous and justly popular sound of string music to St.James' Church, Taunton on
Saturday 22nd September at 7.30 pm. The programme will be a mix of well-loved baroque and classical pieces, a 20th century take on 16th-17th century music, and a Romantic 19th century work. A satisfying selection for an Autumn evening:

Bach Brandenburg Concerto no 3
Handel Concerto Grosso op 6 no 2
Haydn Violin Concerto in C major with Director Mary Eade as soloist
Respighi Ancient Airs and Dances Suite no 3
Kalinnikov Serenade
Vivaldi Concerto Grosso op 3 no 11

The winner of the Taunton Young Musician Competition each year gets to play a Concerto with the Taunton Sinfonietta, and this year the young double bass player Alexander Heather will play at our Christmas concert, on Sunday 2nd December
at 3 pm in Temple Methodist Church. (NOTE the time and venue!)
He's chosen the 19th century composer and double bass virtuoso Bottesini's 2nd Concerto - expect some amazing musical gymnastics! The programme also includes some seasonal works, known and new, plus a Bach Violin Concerto (with Mary Eade), Cyril Rootham's Suite for Piano and Strings, and Leroy Anderson's The Typewriter (Soloist Robin Carpenter).

Tickets for both concerts (£15 adults, £12 Friends, £1 Students) are available from Taunton Visitor Centre (01823 340470), online from www.tauntonsinfonietta.org.uk or at the door.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!
